Phot. by S. Porada

The Department of Plant Pathology has originally been established as the Department of Plant Protection in 1956. At that time, the Department was one of the didactic-scientific units of the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Agriculture erected in Szczecin in 1954. Thus, in 2004, the University of Agriculture celebrated 50 years of its existence.

The organizer and the first head of the Department was Prof. Dr. Tadeusz Dominik. He managed the Department from 1956 to 1979. From October 1979 to 30 September 1999, the head of the Department of Plant Pathology was Prof. Dr. Hab. Tadeusz Madej, and from 1 October 1999 the Department is conducted by Prof. Dr. Hab. Janusz Błaszkowski.

The rooms of the Department of Plant Pathology are within the building of the Faculty of Shaping of Environment and Agriculture located at the Slowackiego 17 street.

Scientific activity

Studies an the most important achievements

  1. The occurrence, ecology, and classification of mycorrhizae of cultivated and uncultivated plants. These pioneer investigations were initiated by T. Dominik, the creator of the Polish mycorrhizal school. The most important achievements of these studies were the establishment of a key to mycorrhizae (Dominik 1961, 1962) and the determination of mycotrophy of many plant associations of Poland.
  2. Studies of the occurrence and distribution of microscopic parasitic fungi of Poland. They have been conducted by J. Błaszkowski, T. Dominik, T. Madej, I. Adamska, B. Czerniawska, and E. Ziolo. Among the fungi identified, many were earlier rarely recorded in Poland and a few were for the first time found in Poland and Europe.
  3. The occurrence, distribution, and taxonomy of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The studies have been initiated by J. Błaszkowski in 1983. Among the fungi found, ca. 60 species were for the first time revealed in Poland, and 24 were described as new for science. Additionally, a new family in the phylum Glomeromycota, Pacisporaceae C. Walker, Blaszk., Schuessler & Schwarzott with the type species, Pac. scintillans (S.L. Rose & Trappe) Sieverd. & Oehl, has been erected (Walker and Schüßler 2004; Walker et al. 2004).
  4. The occurrence of hyperparasitic fungi and their use in biological protection of plants from their pathogens. The frequency of occurrence and the species composition of many hyperpasites were determined, including Ampelomyces quisqualis Ces. ex Schlecht. (Czerniawska 2001; Madej T., Antoszczyszyn 1965).
